Structural Change in Europe I: Digitalisation of Companies and the Working Environment

With a focus on European companies, the following challenges will be considered from a corporate perspective:

  • Digital transformation and methods for developing digital business models (design thinking, lean startup, etc.)
  • Business model development in the context of disruptive developments (sharing economy, crowdsourcing, etc.)
  • Cloud computing, big data and business analytics and their impact on business models
  • Digitisation effects on employment relationships and forms of work
  • Leadership and cooperation in the gig economy and in virtual space
  • Consideration of social and ethical aspects in the context of digital transformation as well as ethics in the modern world of work (dissolution of work boundaries, people analytics).

blended learning, problem-based learning, self-organised identification of societally relevant problems and independent project planning, cooperation with external experts/partners, interdisciplinary work supported by guidance and feedback from teachers

Assessment methods and criteria

(written evaluation) Preparation of a project-related case exercise in small groups (assessment of the project including intermediate objectives 60%) and (oral assessment parts) (40%): Group presentation of case study analysis (25%), participation & performance 15%.

Learning outcome

After successful completion of the module, students can:

  • Explain the impact of new technologies on business processes in European companies from a business perspective and analyse potential impacts,
  • identify key factors influencing business models and explain how business models change in the context of disruptive developments and digital transformation,
  • explain and analyse the impact of the modern world of work on collaboration and leadership,
  • evaluate the impact of digital transformation and disruptive processes on business and work from a social and ethical perspective.
