Working in Austria and Scholarships

Whether or not you are allowed to work in Austria depends on your nationality, the kind of work and on the type of residence title.

Nationals of EU/EEA countries

Citizens of Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Great Britain, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxemburg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland are allowed to work in Austria without work permit being required.

If you are carrying out a job that is not subject to the regulations of the Austrian Act Governing the Employment of Foreign Nationals, you do not need a work permit.

Nationals of third countries

Students from "third countries" having a residence permit for students (Aufenthaltsbewilligung - Studierender) are allowed to work to a limited extent (for up to 20 hours/week - this permit will be granted without labour market check) and in pursuance of the rules laid down in the Austrian Act Governing the Employment of Foreign Nationals (Ausländerbeschäftigungsgesetz – AuslBG).

Important notice: Non-compliance with these regulations may result in a hefty fine or even losing your residence permit. Please contact the Public Employment Service (Arbeitsmarktservice/AMS) or any other organization or a lawyer in case of any doubts.

Vocational internships

In the study plans of our bachelor’s programmes vocational internships are required. For this kind of employment students do usually not need a work permit, but it also depends on the kind of a specific residence title. Our university will support students in finding a suitable placement.

Job offers

Our university has launched a platform Career Center to support our students and alumni in search for jobs. There is also a platform run by ÖH to help students find part-time jobs.

Scholarships

We know that many of our students need financial support in order to be able to study in Austria. There are different grants depending on your country of origin and academic level. Please note that scholarships are offered by different institutions (OeAD, other financial support organizations or foundations) but not by our own institution directly. Please also enquire in your home country whether or not there are scholarships or other financial support options for you.

Details of the OeAD’s scholarship programmes can be found here
