Entry and residence regulations

Students with a nationality from one of the EU/ EEA member states or Switzerland do not require a visa to study in Austria.

Students from other countries might need a visa or residence permit depending on nationality and length of stay in Austria.

All students need to register their residence within 3 working days of moving into their place of residence. Health Insurance

Students from European Countries, who have a European Health Insurance Card, do not require additional health insurance. However, depending on the personal situation, additional travel insurance should be considered.

Students from other countries will need health insurance that covers the full duration of their study period in Austria. The type of insurance needed depends on the type of residence title / visa.

Financial matters

One-time fees:

  • Fees for residence registration process: € 21 - € 42
  • Austrian National Union of Students membership fee per semester: ~€ 25
  • optional: Erasmus Student Network membership for one year: € 15

Approximate living expenses per month:

  • Accommodation € 450 - € 1100
  • Food: € 350
  • Other: 350 €
