After successful completion of the course students can • name characteristics of rail transport and distinguish them from other modes of transport (1) as well as explain them from a transport economic point of view (2) • explain economic fundamentals, basic competitive conditions, and essential framework conditions of rail transport (2) • explain the basics of railroad technology and the history of railroad transport (1) • explain the basics of railroad infrastructure (2) and discuss the organization of railroad infrastructure (2) • name different means of rail transport (1) and distinguish them regarding their possible applications (2) • describe major trends and innovations in rail transport (1) and forecast possible effects (2) • describe how the integrated interval timetable works (1) • explain the effects of rail transport liberalization (2)
