Learning outcome

Upon successful completion of the course, students can

  • describe cultural patterns and linguistic features in East Asia
  • classify the basic approaches of Confucianism and Buddhism and their influence on East Asian culture and illustrate these with examples of East Asian literature and art
  • identify examples of local variation and diversity and place them in historical context
  • critically reflect on the contemporary discourse on "Asian values" as opposed to "Western values
  • assess the relationship between globalisation and localisation through selected East Asian cultural phenomena
  • identify and critically reflect on intercultural differences to European trends based on manifestations of gender ideology in East Asian cultures
  • integrate the acquisition of competences in the field of languages and cultures of East Asia into one's own perspective and actions in the business environment
