Case Studies in Logistics

The case-study “PowerFood” is an advanced case study on distribution logistics outsourcing in Central Europe training students to understand logistics outsourcing. “On-the-job”, the students learn how to develop an outsourcing tender document under the supervision and coaching of their lecturer. The case is underpinned by providing relevant theoretical knowledge. The following aspects will be covered in detail:

  • Terms used in the marketing and sale of contract logistics services
  • Variants of and reasons for outsourcing
  • Logistics contract types and contract components
  • Outsourcing project management
  • Analysis of sales data with regard to logistical relevance
  • Cost-optimised warehouse location and allocation
  • Planning and optimisation of warehouse layout
  • Storage and handling systems
  • Human resources
  • Industrial trucks and transport solutions
  • Budgeting of all logistics costs
  • Preparation and presentation of a tender presentation

Lern- und Lehrmethode

After an initial introduction, groups of 4-5 students each work independently on the case study. At the end of the course, the results are to be presented by each group and discussed in the plenum.

Prüfungsmethode

Immanent performance assessment 100 % (participation, group work, presentations, written documentation).
Assessment criteria: task-specific requirements regarding structure and scope of problem solving, comprehensibility of the presentation of solutions and results, extent of problem identification and problem characterization, completeness of the elaborated cases, degree of detail of the elaborated solutions, compliance with the criteria of scientific writing.

After successful completion of the course, students are able

  • to name and explain important components of logistics contracts (2),
  • to name and explain different types of contracts within contract logistics (2),
  • to name and explain alternative concepts of outsourcing (2),
  • to name and explain different intralogistics technologies and concepts (2),
  • to explain important requirement components from tenders for contract logistics solutions:
    • explain and analyze them,
    • to develop solution concepts qualitatively based on this,
    • describe and calculate these solution concepts quantitatively,
    • and to plan their implementation (2, 4, 6),
    • explain the function and significance of project management in contract logistics projects (2),
  • to explain and calculate costs resulting from logistics processes (2, 4),
  • to name and explain implementation alternatives and to analyze and evaluate their advantages/disadvantages situationally (4, 5),
  • analyze and evaluate the suitability of different intralogistics tools (5,6).
