Academic Research and Methods 1 Academic research theory Epistemology (myths, religion, philosophy) Different methods of knowledge acquisition, methodological structures Introduction to qualitative and quantitative methods Review of the principles of citation (with reference to the relevant university templates) Academic English Writing and Presentation Skills Writing academic texts in English: structure, style, register, citation rules Presentation skills and persuasive speech Advanced grammar for academic writing (conditionals, gerund/infinitive, relative clauses, prepositions, syntax and conjunctions) Vocabulary for academic writing: academic register Thematic content will be based on topical issues.

Presentations, discussions, analysing and writing texts, grammar exercises, pair and small-group activities.

Assessment methods and criteria

50 points each for continuous assessment of Academic Research and Methods 1 and Academic English Writing and Presentation Skills; specific details of the assessment for Academic Research and Methods 1 will be provided by the lecturer; the assessment for Academic English Writing and Presentation Skills is weighted as follows: written assignment: 18, presentation: 15, participation: 7, quiz: 10.

Learning outcome

Scientific Work and Methods 1: After completing this course, students are able to develop practice-related research questions using sophisticated quantitative and qualitative academic sources, and identify the methods required to address such questions, as well as the fundamental principles behind these methods. In particular, students are able to write their dissertation proposal based on a question they have selected themselves. Academic Englisch Writing and Presentation Skills: After completing this part of the module, students are able to understand and analyse the structure and language characteristics of academic text types in English, accurately employ the grammar used in such texts and independently write texts on complex academic topics. Students are also able to address, discuss and effectively present complex academic topics in English, as well as defend their own views.
