Russia as a Global Player

Topics:

  • Russian domestic, economic, and foreign policy since 1992.
  • Russian political system: Russia's constitutional law, its demographic development, its party system, its elite recruitment, and its civil society.
The lecture deals with the reform of the constitution, the restructuring of the party system, the increasing curtailment of the rights of civil society, the expansion of control over the media and the weakening of finance and big business. In addition, the question of Russia's position in international politics is examined, the revisionism of Russian foreign policy is highlighted and Russia's actions in recent and current (violent) conflicts are studied.

After successful completion of the course, students can:

  • demonstrate the main features of Russian domestic, foreign and economic policy and the Russian constitution
  • describe and reflect the basic ruling practices of the Putin era
  • identify consequences of Russia's demographic development on the basis of empirical data and explain its significance for the political development of the country
  • to articulate and critically discuss Russia's role and behaviour in international politics and explain it using the example of (violent) conflicts with Russian participation.
