Emerging Markets

The course provides an overview of different stages of development and types of emerging markets and transition economies. Selected theoretical perspectives such as modernization theory, dependency approaches and thew word systems approach which explain the development of emerging markets and their role in the international economy are presented. Based on a historical perspective on emerging markets selected questions such as the dependence on commodity exports and their implications for economic, financial, social and political developments are discussed. Moreover, questions of sustainable development strategies are considered.

Lecture, discussions, case studies and group work

Prüfungsmethode

Final written exam with open questions that requires students to show how they apply their knowledge about international developments and the role of emerging markets therein (70 points). Group works and group presentations on selected case studies assess the students’ capacity to apply theoretical perspectives and to assess and evaluate different growth models in emerging markets. Methodologically, theories are applied to case studies (30 points).

After successful completion of this course, the students can describe social, financial and economic dynamics in different types of emerging markets. In addition, students are able to explain different theoretical perspectives that describe the development processes of emerging markets. Moreover, students are able to assess different development models and their implications as well as the conditions that enable alternative future development paths.
