· Introduction of written academic genres in English (research proposals, master theses)
· Seminar presentations of research findings; academic register and vocabulary practice; discussion of formal criteria of research proposals and master theses
· Drafting research proposals, entire papers or theses in English academic prose, including how to deal with academic sources and quotations
· Dealing with excerpts and paraphrases
· Avoiding inadvertent plagiarism
· Presenting academic findings in spoken Academic English

Lern- und Lehrmethode

Discussion and demonstration of academic conventions on quoting from academic sources, use of academic voice, appropriate formal style and register. Discussion of existing texts as specimens of the respective academic genres (e.g., research proposals, master theses). Writing workshop (hands-on approach).

Prüfungsmethode

Students will be graded on the basis of a draft of their master theses (approximately six pages), on how well they have applied the conventions of Academic English (e.g. quoting, formal vocabulary and style, text cohesion).

· paraphrase, and quote from the relevant literature
· produce excerpts and abstracts
· draft academic texts in English (e.g. research proposal, master's thesis).

· use formal spoken academic English register to present their papers.
