Production Cost Calculation

The course provides students with detailed knowledge of the basic principles of production cost calculation based on shooting schedules. The course illustrates various areas of calculation, such as labor costs, technical costs, rights costs, etc. in context and as cost factors, so that students can understand all cost approaches from the point of view of qualified production management and line production management. Furthermore, costs for special technical tools and the use of production-specific calculation software are discussed.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Applied methods including macro and micro levels of teaching. Macro methods are case studies, analyses and games. Micro methods are keynote lectures, examples and discussions. Students work in the plenum.

Assessment methods and criteria

One grade for both lecture and tutorial part of class. In total 70 points for final written exam. The tutorial part is worth 30 points (continuous assessment). In total 100 points are to be obtained.

Learning outcome

After the successful completion of this course the students will be able to work out technical and calculative basics of film, TV and media productions on the basis of shooting schedules. They will be able to prepare smaller productions for financing by means of calculations. The graduates will be able to carry out demanding tasks as assistants in production or line production management for fiction/non-fiction productions.
