Fundamentals of Convergent Technology

This course describes content-related, technical and economic aspects of media convergence as a key issue for the future and specifically analyzes selected areas such as ip-TV, web-TV, video on demand, convergent newsrooms and the multi-media production of non-fictional and fictional content.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Applied methods including macro and micro levels of teaching. Macro methods are case studies, analyses and debates. Micro methods are keynote lectures, dialogic learning, text analyses and discussions. Students work in groups or in the plenum.

Assessment methods and criteria

One grade for both lecture and tutorial part of class. In total 70 points for final written exam. The tutorial part is worth 30 points (continuous assessment). In total 100 points are to be obtained.

Learning outcome

After the successful completion of this course the students will be able to describe the key areas of media convergence and outline their respective features. Furthermore, the students will be able to describe international media groups, their business portfolios as well as basic business models and how they work.
