ABSTRACT

Sustainability is a response to structural problems of contemporary societies and their global dimensions: It is the promise of a future-oriented society in environmental, economic and social terms, embedded in more justice for present and future generations as well as a global solidarity and responsibility. Contrary to this claim the discussion of sustainability of headquarters and their effects on their sites lacks attention. This article aims to provide a provisional inventory for the characterization of the term of sustainability of regional headquarters and their locations. In a first step, current concepts of sustainability are examined. Starting from the assumption that sustainability is a concept based on interests, stakeholders of regional headquarters are defined and some examples for conflicts and synergies are presented. On this basis, a comprehensive characterization of the concept of the socio-economic sustainability is being developed for headquarter locations. This includes above all economic and social aspects of the headquarters and the region of site: Politics and administration, companies, employees and other person affected by the site of the regional headquarter.Regional headquarters are in a special tension between the mother company, own interests and subsidiaries. On the basis of global responsibility and solidarity the concept of sustainability has to be widened to include economic, social and ecological responsibility for subsidiaries, their site countries and stakeholder groups on these sites.
